If you could put together a tour with five other bands, past or present, dead or alive, who would be on the bill?

The Bad Brains, Led Zeppelin, maybe the Specials, in like circa 1981-82. Uuhh, Tom Jones, and John Fogerty.

Do you consider yourself to be successful?

I think by most people's standards, yeah.

What about by your own?

By my own standards? I never think in those terms. So, if you're asking me to, because I'm not used to thinking in those terms, I don't know.

Have you accomplished the things that you set out to accomplish?

The funny thing is, I've accomplished way more than I ever set out to accomplish. But I never think of it like that. Even though I've made lots of records, and I've written lots of pieces of music that I'm quite happy with, if I write one song that I don't think is very good, I think I'm a failure. I can write 500 wonderful pieces of music and one piece of music that stinks, and I think I suck.

I can write 500 wonderful pieces of music and one piece of music that stinks, and I think I suck.

So you're pretty hard on yourself, to say the least.

To an almost pathological sense, yeah.

Who are some of the bands that you've done remixes for, and what does that entail?

Usually, they send me master tapes and I re-interpret it however I see fit. Sometimes I'll give them dance mixes and radio mixes and strange, obscure reinterpretations. Who have I done remixes for? It's a pretty long list. Some of the more notable people would be like Michael Jackson, Metallica, Brian Eno, Aerosmith, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, David Bowie, Blur, New Order, Freddy Mercury, Depeche Mode, Orbital, Talking Heads. I mean, that's like one-tenth of it.

What makes something a "Moby" remix?

Usually, a strong melodic sense, and a pretty odd reworking of the original.

You seem to be really busy, with your own music, doing remixes, producing, and everything. Do you ever get a day to yourself, and what do you do on those days?

Because I live and work in the same place, when I make music I almost exclusively do it all by myself. I have this strange seamless life where I don't necessarily think "OK, now I'm working. Now I'm not working." It's all a part of the same world. I'll work for four hours then go out for four hours, then come back and work for a couple of hours, then go out again.

What are some things that you like to do?

Read, hang out with friends, eat food — the simple things.

What are your three favorite books, and what's your one favorite movie?

My favorite movie right now is Starship Troopers. I really think I'd have a hard time being close friends with someone who didn't love that film because it's so smart. First of all, it's terribly entertaining — giant bugs disemboweling human beings. Science fiction and monster movies — I love that stuff. But it's very, very smart. Paul Veirholden did a remarkable job. And I have some close friends who are filmmakers, and they're just in awe. It's so unconventional, it sort of positions the world in the 24th century as this friendly, fascist place. And he borrows so heavily from Lenny Reifenstahl, who was Hitler's personal filmmaker. She made Triumph of the Will and it's funny and wonderful. Favorite books? I love a lot of Southern gothic literature like Flannery O'Connor, Tennessee Williams, and Walker Percy. There's a new book called The Brothers K by David James Duncan that I really like. I think he's a wonderful writer.

Where do you picture yourself as old man, or do you not think that far ahead?

I know what I'd like to be doing is living in northern Arizona or southern Utah with friends, family, and tons of animals. I hope that I'll be writing music and playing music until I die, because I've been playing music since I was eight years old. As far as making records or doing anything like that, I'm not too concerned about it.
